SINGLES SYMPHONY

Maybe finding a date to the latest Beethoven concert was easier in the nineteenth century. These days, classical-music lovers can lose each other in darkly lit concert halls and quick-change radio formats.

Enter Tamara Monique Conroy. Monique, as she's known to members of the Classical Music Lovers' Exchange, is a matchmaker with the persistence and energy of Leonard Bernstein. Since 1980, she's published a monthly newsletter for CMLE members with brief descriptions of men and women looking for someone special to "share evenings listening to Bach and Brahms."

Monique, who taught special education before founding CMLE on a lark, started with a few ads in music publications.

Each member fills out a profile and pays $65 to be listed in and receive six monthly newsletters. Monique and four part-time helpers run CMLE from her Pelham home. Members are treated like a large extended family: The newsletter lists marriages, births, recitals by the musician members, and even bits of musical history' and trivia.

Melanie, a dancer, was relieved to join CMLE and meet people who could appreciate her interest in the arts. "Monique is like my fairy godmother," she says. "I met Bruce through CMLE a year and a half ago, and it's been wonderful."

"I'm a musician, and my wife's a lawyer," says Steve, who dated through CMLE for nearly three years before meeting his wife. "We never would have met if it weren't for CMLE." They now have a ten-month-old child-an addition, as Monique puts it, to her "new generation of classical-music lovers." ANDREW ROSENSTEIN
